Elephant Tusk Entrance Side Note:
Our entrance is marked by a pair of elephant tusks. Naturally, there is a story behind them…
When one of the more than 2000 elephants living in neighboring Kruger Park, died during the Covid-19 pandemic, his death initially went unnoticed. This bull died in a gully in the Crocodile River bed, following a fight with another bull.
One evening, months later, another elephant herd had scattered the dead bull’s remains, making them visible to some people in Marloth Park.
The skull, now lying in plain sight, was sighted close to one of the tusks. The Section Ranger at Crocodile Bridge Camp was called in to recover the tusks, and before moving them to the Ivory Vault at Skukuza Camp, permission was granted for well-known local artist Dawie Fourie, to memorialize the life of the elephant bull by molding his tusks. The original tusks weighed around 27 kg each, and this is consistent with the average elephant Kruger Park bull’s tusks. Today, the replicas of this wild bull’s tusks invite our guests into the magical realm of ThornForest, and his memory lives on in the wild he called home.
